Car sales tax in Alberta, worked out

Buy a $30,000 vehicle from a dealer in Alberta and tax adds $1,500, so the deal is $31,500 before licensing and registration. Buy the same car privately and there is nothing provincial to add at all. Drive the same purchase across the border into Ontario and the tax is $3,900, which is $2,400 more.

Alberta is one of 11 jurisdictions this calculator holds a sourced tax rule for. Every figure on this page comes from a government page you can open, dated, and the arithmetic is done in front of you rather than behind a "results" button.

Run the numbers

The calculator prices a vehicle over its whole life, not just the loan: insurance, fuel, maintenance and licensing on top of the payment. Today it does that with Ontario figures.

How we got these numbers

One honest limit: the full calculator models Ontario. Insurance, licensing and the fee set are Ontario figures in this version, so the all-in monthly number it gives you is an Ontario number. The Alberta tax rules above are sourced and correct, and they are not yet wired into the payment engine.

People also ask

  • How much tax do you pay on a car in Alberta?

Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so a vehicle bought from a dealer carries the 5% federal GST and nothing else. On a $30,000 vehicle that is $1,500, for $31,500 all in before licensing.

  • Do you pay tax on a private car sale in Alberta?

There is no provincial tax to collect when you register a vehicle bought from another person, because Alberta levies no sales tax of its own.

  • Does a trade-in cut the tax in Alberta?

Where a dealer takes your old vehicle in trade, the tax is charged on the difference: the trade-in credit comes off the price before GST or HST is applied. That is a federal rule, so it holds everywhere in Canada.
